The Opinion Essay

In an opinion essay, the writer attempts to persuade readers that their opinion on a certain controversial subject is correct.
An opinion essay, begins with an introduction, followed by the body paragraphs, and finishes with a conclusion.
The INTRODUCTION has three parts – the hook, or catch, the background information, and the thesis statement.
In the hook, introduce which issue you are writing about. Then in the connecting information briefly explain why it is important and give background information on who it affects and how they are affected. In the Thesis Statement clearly state your point of view with the points of development.
Thesis Statement
The thesis statement should clearly state the writer’s opinion, and the points of development, either in one sentence, or in two.
TOPIC: Some people believe we should protect animals on the planet. Other people believe we should not protect them, but allow them to live. What is your opinion? Support your opinion with details and examples.
Let’s say you are in favor of protecting animals from extinction. You could begin your thesis statement by saying:
“Animals are important to the planet’s survival, as they balance oxygen levels, provide food and clothing, and help maintain human health.”
As you can see this thesis statement, not only gives direction as to where the essay is going, but it also provides the points of development for the three body paragraphs.
The BODY PARAGRAPHS support the main idea of the thesis statement.
- As in all paragraphs each body paragraph should contain a strong topic sentence that supports the writer’s opinion in the Thesis Statement.
- The topic sentence should be based on one of the points of development in the Thesis Statement.
- Support the topic sentence with strong reasons, examples, facts, and/or explanations.
- An opposing opinion may also be included to show the weakness of a counter-argument.
The CONCLUSION restates, and/or summarizes the main idea and leaves a closing thought.
- The conclusion restates the thesis statement.
- It may also summarize main points
- It may close with a comment, a prediction, or even a warning.
