Where is the Statue of Liberty Located in New York?

The Lady in the Harbor: Where is the Statue of Liberty?

If you are planning a trip to New York City, the Statue of Liberty is probably at the top of your list. It is one of the most famous symbols of freedom in the world, but many people are confused about exactly where she stands. Is she in New York or New Jersey? Let’s find out!

The Exact Location

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island. This is a small island in the middle of New York Harbor.

While the island is closer to the coast of Jersey City, New Jersey, it is officially part of New York State. This has been a friendly argument between the two states for many years!

How to Get There

You cannot walk or drive to the statue. To see her up close, you must take a ferry. Most tourists start their journey from one of two places:

  1. Battery Park: Located at the southern tip of Manhattan, New York.
  2. Liberty State Park: Located in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Tip: The ferry ride is beautiful! You get a great view of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge.

What is Nearby?

Right next to Liberty Island is Ellis Island. In the past, millions of people moving to America stopped there first. Today, it is a fascinating museum. Most ferry tickets include a stop at both islands, so you can see two historic sites in one day.

Why Visit?

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States in 1886. She holds a torch high in the air to light the way to freedom. Whether you climb to the crown or just walk around the pedestal, standing beneath the “Copper Lady” is an experience you will never forget.

Happy travels, and don’t forget your camera!
