Starting your studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is an exciting journey! However, you will quickly notice that university-level writing is quite different from the writing you did in high school. To get good grades, you need more than just correct grammar.
Whether you are an undergraduate or a master’s student, here are the core writing skills you need to develop to succeed at UTC.
1. Think Critically and Build a Strong Thesis
In university, professors do not just want you to summarize a book or an article. They want you to analyze the information and form your own opinion. Every academic paper needs a “thesis statement.” This is one clear sentence, usually at the beginning of your essay, that explains your main argument. Everything else in your paper must support this central idea.
2. Organize Your Ideas Clearly
A good essay is easy for the professor to read. You should use clear transition words (like furthermore, however, or in contrast) to guide the reader from one idea to the next. Every paragraph should focus on one main point, starting with a clear topic sentence.
3. Adapt to Different Subjects
You will need to change your writing style depending on the class. For example, a business report for a management class should be direct and use action words. On the other hand, a lab report for a chemistry class must be very objective and describe exactly what happened in the experiment.
4. Respect Academic Integrity
U.S. universities take academic honesty very seriously. You must avoid plagiarism, which means using someone else’s words, ideas, or data without giving them credit. You will need to learn how to properly reference your sources using specific formatting styles. The most common styles at UTC are APA (for sciences, education, and business) and MLA (for English and humanities).
5. Always Revise Your Work
Great papers are never written in a single day. You must develop the habit of writing a first draft early, and then taking the time to review and edit it. Look for structural mistakes and areas where your argument could be stronger.
Where to Get Help on Campus
You do not have to perfect these skills completely on your own! UTC provides excellent resources to support you:
- The Writing and Communication Center (WCC): Located in the UTC Library, the WCC offers free, one-on-one meetings. The staff can help you with anything from brainstorming ideas to reviewing your final draft.
- First-Year Composition Classes: If you are an undergraduate, you will likely take ENGL 1010 and 1020. These classes are designed to teach you exactly how to do U.S. academic research and write strong essays.
Writing at the university level takes practice, but mastering these skills will help you succeed in your classes at UTC and in your future career. Happy writing!
